David R. Macdonald MVP Chess Tournament for Chicago Public School students

Tournament Information

Chicago Chess Foundation and the David R. Macdonald Foundation will be hosting the 2024 MVP Chess Tournament for Chicago Public School students on March 25, 2024. As always the tournament will be hosted at the beautiful Winter Garden in the Harold Washington Library in downtown Chicago. This tournament is open to Chicago Public School students in 3rd - 12th grade.

Tournament Format: 5-round Swiss-style tournament, G/20, d2. All players will be required to use a clock. Swiss style means that every registered player will play all five rounds. G/20, d2 means that each player will have 20 minutes on their clocks to start the game and there will be a 2-second delay before your clock starts on every move.

Schedule:

9:00 - 9:45 am - Check-in

10:00 am - First round

11:00 am - Second Round

11:50 am - Lunch Break (Lunch will not be provided this year)

12:15 pm - Third Round

1:15 pm - Fourth Round

2:15 pm - Fifth Round

3:00 pm - Awards

Sections: 11th - 12th Grade, 9th - 10th Grade, 6th - 8th Grade, 3rd - 5th Grade

Awards:

11th - 12th Grade*: Scholarships of 1st - $12,000, 2nd - $6,000, 3rd & 4th - $3,000

9th - 10th Grade*: $1,000 scholarship to top Freshman and top Sophomore

6th - 8th Grade & 3rd - 5th Grade**: Trophies to top 5 players

* Ties for scholarships will be broken by a blitz playoff of G/5, d2 after the last round.

Byes

1 Point Byes will be awarded to players that are present for a round, but there is an odd number of players in the section and they are selected to be the “odd person out.”

1/2 point byes are awarded for requested byes. Players are allowed up to two 1/2 point byes per tournament and must be requested before the round requested is paired and posted.

0 point byes will be given to players who check-in late to the tournament. 0 point byes will also be given to players who are present at the tournament, arrive late to their board, and forfeit the round, but do not wish to be removed from the tournament.
